dual nationality bill

launced today

Dear Dutch citizen abroad, dear friends of the SNBN,

For a long time, we were unable to report any news about dual nationality. But behind the scenes, the SNBN has not been sitting idle. Thanks in part to our years of pressure and lobbying, De Volkskrant reports today that Members of Parliament Paternotte (D66) and Mutluer (GL/PvdA) have submitted a new bill to allow dual nationality. Not only the news about Nobel Prize winner Andre Geim losing his Dutch citizenship, but also the increasingly uncertain global situation, provided the final push to get the political world moving again.

Chairman Eelco Keij: “The Netherlands is seriously lagging behind in this area, with literally hundreds of thousands of Dutch citizens in the danger zone. We are surrounded by countries that have moved with the times and see dual citizenship for what it is: an inherent part of modern society. Moreover, in America, you see how citizenship can even be used as leverage: this is unacceptable. It is high time that Dutch politicians free the more than 1 million Dutch citizens abroad from all the practical, financial, emotional, and trade obstacles that come with the current ban.”

This good news feels like "now or never": dual citizenship has never been so close. On September 4th, the Day of Dutch Citizens Abroad , we will once again highlight the interests of all those Dutch citizens abroad, right in the heart of The Hague's political arena, and then continue our lobbying efforts regarding the upcoming parliamentary process to make this bill a permanent policy.

After the bill has been submitted, the SNBN will also provide a substantive response.
