Current status of dual nationality

In October 2023, D66 and PvdA/GroenLinks introduced a new dual nationality bill – not from the then-government, but from the House of Representatives. This bill aims to make it easier to obtain and maintain dual nationality. The parliamentary elections followed shortly after. Earlier this year, there was a written consultation on the 2023 bill (a kind of question and answer session; see the report here ), and from this, it can be concluded that the Christian Union and BBB are opposed. Regarding the SP, CDA, and VVD, there is still some uncertainty. The bill is, of course, supported by the submitting parties themselves and VOLT.
On the Day of Dutch Citizens Outside the Netherlands (September 5, 2024), members of parliament from the D66, VVD, and NSC parties promised to consult with each other on how to help this bill secure a majority. Because many of you are asking about the current status, we're providing a brief update:
Behind-the-scenes discussions are underway and/or planned. For the sake of a positive outcome, it's far too early to disclose any details – and we certainly don't know all the details either. Until recently, "dual nationality" was taboo within the VVD and CDA (from which many NSC members have transferred), making the issue a sensitive one there.
The political agenda is full, and dual citizenship is a no-go for the largest governing party, the PVV. This means that progress on this issue is necessarily slow – aside from the ongoing instability of this cabinet and the usual end-of-year rush. The party leading the way (D66) has lost significantly more seats since the last election, and therefore has significantly less manpower. Moreover, if the bill were to be voted on now, the chances of it being rejected are very high, and we would be back to square one.
What can you do? Participate in Dutch elections, even though it can be complicated and difficult. SNBN provides information about the political parties' positions on dual citizenship. Join a political party and become active within it. Please continue to approach Dutch politicians in a friendly manner with our desire to open up dual citizenship. Even if you don't receive a response, you'll help keep the issue on the agenda (and it would be great if you could send such an email via CC to info@snbn.nl !). We also want change for our supporters, so as soon as we hear news, we'll share it immediately on social media and news.
