Consular Services

In recent years, a significant number of embassies and consulates have shrunk or closed due to budget cuts. As a result, many Dutch citizens have to travel thousands of kilometers for consular services such as passport applications or renewals.

Apply for a Dutch passport

Even if you emigrate, you remain Dutch. Moreover, you don't simply receive a passport from your new country of residence, so you need your Dutch passport as a travel document, but also to identify yourself – for example, if you need to renew your visa or residence permit.

If your Dutch passport expires, you generally remain Dutch. However, you'll probably still want to renew it. Keep in mind that this is much more difficult and expensive than when you were still living in the Netherlands. You can apply for/renew your Dutch passport in several places:

  • This is possible at many (but by no means all) Dutch embassies and consulates-general.

  • Many embassies and consulates organize annual application opportunities in places where many Dutch people live, but which are far from an embassy or consulate.

  • In the Netherlands this is possible at Schiphol Airport, at the municipality of The Hague and at various border municipalities .

To apply, please follow the instructions on the Netherlands Worldwide website . There you'll also find information on how to schedule an appointment, what documents to bring, the costs involved, and how to obtain your new passport.
