Last Thursday, September 5, SNBN chairman Eelco Keij proclaimed the first Day of Dutch Citizens Abroad from The Hague. Those present, both in person and virtually, seized the opportunity to ask questions directly to the members of parliament present ( Nicolien van Vroonhoven (NSC), Jan Paternotte (D66) and Eric van der Burg (VVD)) and the other panel members: Tom Bey (Emigration Scholarship), Linde van den Bosch (Dutch Education Abroad) and Marion Kappeyne van de Coppello (former ambassador). About forty people were present in person in Nieuwspoort and more than three hundred people participated online.

The entire program can be viewed here. We would like to highlight three short moments:
Former professor Ulli d'Oliviera (often involved behind the scenes in previous legislative proposals concerning Dutch nationality) asked a question about dual nationality , which resulted in a conversation – and de facto lobby moment – about opening up dual nationality, in which Member of Parliament and former State Secretary Van der Burg (who was himself involved in this subject in his previous position) indicated that steps could now be taken here, based on the previous legislative proposal between VVD and D66. The Netherlands is a coalition country, and the Members of Parliament will actively ask other parties whether they can support this. Watch the fragment, which lasts about three minutes, here:
Member of Parliament Nicolien van Vroonhoven (NSC) explains where she came into contact with the SNBN and indicates its added value [fragment lasts over a minute]
Servaas van Beekum (living in Sydney, coincidentally visiting the Netherlands) who asks the question how politicians deal with negative stereotypes about Dutch people outside the Netherlands, and the answer of Member of Parliament Van der Burg to this question [fragment lasts about 2 minutes]:
In addition, several other topics were discussed, such as the current peak in passports, the importance of Dutch education abroad (generally recognized by members of parliament), the new group of Dutch semigrants (Dutch people who emigrate and remigrate several times), and advanced knowledge that Dutch people have that is in high demand abroad.
We would love to come back next year! The Foundation Dutch People Abroad looks forward to annually devoting attention to the new Day of the Dutch People Abroad on September 5 – and invites everyone, and other organizations at home and abroad, to think along about the set-up for next year.
