On 3 September 2026, the third edition of the Day of the Dutch Abroad took place. The event was held at Nieuwspoort in The Hague, at the heart of Dutch politics. With a full audience and more than 200 live viewers from around the world, a lively debate unfolded around the day's theme: "Expanding Access to Dual Nationality."
The day was hosted by Frits Huffnagel, former Deputy Mayor of Amsterdam. Following a brief opening and introductory remarks by Eelco Keij, Chair of the SNBN (Foundation for Dutch Nationals Abroad), attendees watched a video setting out the context: who Dutch citizens living abroad are, why the issue of dual nationality directly affects them, and which aspects of the proposed legislation to make dual nationality more widely available are particularly important to them.
This was followed by a panel discussion featuring representatives from both the House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer) and the Senate (Eerste Kamer), alongside legal and academic experts. You can watch the livestream recording below.
