For several years now, a Dutch citizen who lost their EU citizenship along with their Dutch nationality can attempt to regain it through a so-called "assessment." In practice, this proved to be a sham: only 4% of those who applied for the scheme actually regained their Dutch citizenship. The Council of State has now ruled that the scheme is being applied too strictly: many arguments put forward for regaining Dutch citizenship are wrongly dismissed by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND). It is not yet entirely clear what this means in practice; for the time being, we cannot immediately attach any individual consequences to this.
