During the launch of the Day of the Dutch Citizens Abroad, a (semi-)spontaneous discussion arose among the members of parliament present (NSC, VVD, D66) about the possible opening of dual citizenship to Dutch citizens abroad. The previous cabinet almost had a bill ready, but then the cabinet fell, so in a sense, we have to start over.
We understand that the parties have agreed to discuss this soon, but this meeting hasn't yet taken place (no excuse, but for those who follow Dutch political news: the past two weeks have certainly not been dull). Nevertheless, we're keeping a close eye on things – no need to email us about this; we're really keeping a close eye on things and will get back to you as soon as there's news!
Plans for new cabinet
The new (unnamed) coalition agreement contains little new information for Dutch people outside the Netherlands, except for two elements:
The requirements for naturalization and obtaining Dutch nationality will be (significantly) tightened; this may have consequences for internationally composed families who want to move to the Netherlands;
A 10% budget cut is being targeted for the postal network (including embassies and consulates). How the government intends to implement this is still unclear.
