Current Dutch nationality law generally prohibits holding or acquiring another nationality. If you, as a Dutch citizen, wish to acquire another nationality, you must be aware that you could lose your Dutch citizenship. There are a few exceptions where the Dutch government may permit holding two (or more) nationalities. These exceptions apply if you acquired dual nationality after April 1, 2003.

Exceptions

  • you were born in the country of that other nationality and had your main residence there at the time of acquisition;

  • before reaching the age of majority, you have had your main residence in the country of that other nationality for an uninterrupted period of at least five years;

  • you are married or have a registered partnership (recognized by the Netherlands) with a person who has that other nationality.

NB: Dutch nationality law is extremely complex and can vary significantly depending on your situation. For professional advice tailored to your situation, the SNBN recommends consulting a Dutch immigration lawyer.
